Lying west of the Rockies the Purcells face the Rockies across the long Rocky Mountain Trench and were often confused as the Selkirks. Older than the neighboring Rockies, the Purcells are generally 1000 to 2000 ft lower than the Rockies but they have more high peaks than the Selkirks.
